Its successor, [[Shenmue 2|''Shenmue 2'']] was released on the Dreamcast in 2001, but never made it to North America on the platform. Due to the Dreamcast's early death and Sega's end as a console manufacturer, Shenmue 2 was released in North America on the original Microsoft Xbox in 2002.

There is a forklift racing minigame in the game, making it one of the most memorable video games featuring forklifts in existence. In the minigame Ryo is tasked to compete with other operators trying to reach the finish line first. Depending on what place Ryo got in the race, he can earn a forklift Capsule Toy. The forklifts designs are all of the same model, however they have unique numbers to distinguish them from eachother. Ryo's forklift has the number 5.

After the race, Mark Kimberly will give Ryo a route map saying where the crates must be transported to and the quota for the day. Each time Ryo exceeds his quota, he will be given a 50 yen raise per crate. It is possible to get no pay if Ryo doesn't do any work, this will make the foreman Ryozo Yada very angry.
