Spider-Man vs. The Kingpin is a side-scrolling action video game initially released for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis in August 1991, later ported to other Sega platforms including the Master System, Game Gear, and Sega CD. The game follows Spider-Man as he attempts to stop the Kingpin, who has planted a nuclear bomb in New York City and framed Spider-Man for the theft of the weapon. To disarm the bomb, Spider-Man must collect keys held by various villains from his rogues' gallery, including Doctor Octopus, Sandman, The Lizard, Hobgoblin, Vulture, Mysterio, Electro, and Venom.
The game's plot involves Spider-Man battling through levels featuring these villains, each with unique environments and challenges. Midway through the game, Venom kidnaps Mary Jane Watson, adding urgency to Spider-Man's mission. Players must navigate platforming challenges, defeat enemies, and utilize Spider-Man's web-slinging and combat abilities to progress. The game's climax involves rescuing Mary Jane from a deadly trap set by the Kingpin and confronting him in a final battle. Success leads to a good ending where the Kingpin is arrested, while failure results in a bad ending with the bomb detonating and Spider-Man being wrongly apprehended.
The Sega CD version of the game, titled The Amazing Spider-Man vs. The Kingpin, expanded on the original with enhanced graphics, voice acting, and additional levels, including Mysterio's Funhouse and a subway level featuring the Vulture. It also introduced new difficulty levels and a mini-comic collection feature. The game was notable for its faithful adaptation of Spider-Man lore and its influence on later superhero games, including the 2004 Spider-Man 2 game, which paid homage to it with a similar level design.
In the game Spider-Man is forced to fight against a murderous forklift operator.
