Shenmue II is the second installment in the Shenmue trilogy, serving as a sequel to the original Shenmue and a prequel to Shenmue III. The game continues the story of Ryo Hazuki, a young man on a quest to avenge his father's murder. In Shenmue II, Ryo travels to Hong Kong, Kowloon, and Guilin, China, following clues related to the mysterious Phoenix and Dragon mirrors.
The game begins with Ryo arriving in Hong Kong in search of Master Lishao Tao, who is believed to hold crucial information about Lan Di, the man responsible for his father's death. Along the way, Ryo meets Shenhua, a young woman who appears in his dreams and is connected to the legacy of the mirrors. Together, they travel to Bailu Village, where Shenhua's father is missing, and they discover a cryptic note and a sword with seven stars. This leads them to a stone quarry where they uncover a mechanism that reveals carvings of the Phoenix and Dragon mirrors.
The game also introduces new characters, such as Joy, a strong-minded girl who rides a motorcycle, and various local martial artists. Shenmue II features an open-world environment with elements of action, adventure, and role-playing, including quick-time events and a day-night cycle. The game was originally released for the Sega Dreamcast and later ported to the Xbox. Due to exclusivity rights, the North American Dreamcast version was canceled, and the European release featured Japanese audio with subtitles.
Shenmue II received positive reviews, with Game Informer giving it an 8/10 score for the Xbox version. The game was later re-released as part of a HD collection titled Shenmue I & II for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, along with additional features such as trophies and achievements. The game's story and gameplay have been praised for their depth and innovation, though it has also faced criticism for its complexity and pacing.
