Shenmue is an action-adventure game developed by AM2 of CRI and published by SEGA. It follows teenage martial artist Ryo Hazuki as he seeks revenge for his father's murder in 1980s Yokosuka, Japan.

Gameplay

The game features an open world with unprecedented environmental detail, interactive 3D objects, and a real-time day-and-night system. Created by Yu Suzuki, gameplay blends brawler-style fighting, quick time events (QTEs), and daily life simulation. At its release, it was the most expensive video game ever produced, costing approximately $70 million. The narrative continued in Shenmue 2 (2001) and Shenmue 3 (2019), with the original game eventually being ported to modern consoles like the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Forklifts

Ryo famously takes a job as a forklift operator at the New Yokosuka Harbor District. This segment includes a daily forklift racing minigame where Ryo competes against other operators to earn Capsule Toys. Ryo operates forklift Number 5. Following the morning race, Ryo must meet a daily work quota by transporting crates. Exceeding the quota results in a pay raise, while failing to work draws the ire of the foreman, Ryozo Yada. Winning the race unlocks the "Mark's Favorite" achievement/trophy. The forklift job also appears in Shenmue the Animation, specifically in episodes 4 and 5.

Achivement

  • Mark's Favorite is a forklift achievement/trophy in Shenmue, earned by winning the forklift race.

Trivia

  • In Episode 4 of Shenmue the Animation, Ryo gets a job as a forklift operator at the harbor like how he does in the game. In Episode 5, Mark along with Goro and Mai Sawano use a forklift to help rescue Nozomi Harasaki when she is held hostage by the Mad Angels. Ryo also quits his job rather than getting fired like in the game.
