Black Mesa is a fan-made remake of Valve Software’s Half-Life, reimagined using the Source engine. It aims to recreate the original Half-Life experience with enhanced graphics, improved gameplay, and expanded content, particularly in the Xen chapters, which were significantly overhauled and expanded.

The game follows Gordon Freeman, a theoretical physicist at the Black Mesa Research Facility, as he navigates through a series of challenges involving an interdimensional alien invasion and a military clean-up crew.

The project, which began development in 2004, was initially released in 2012 but was incomplete, with the Xen chapters and other content added later. It was fully released in 2020 after 15 years of development, offering a refined single-player campaign with 19 chapters, including all new and expanded Xen levels.
